There are many benefits to staying social as you age, but sometimes it can
be challenging to find ways to get involved in social activities. Here
are some helpful tips for the elderly on staying social at any age.
Dancing: Even though it can sometimes be
difficult for elderly people to move around as easily as when they were
younger, this doesn’t mean that they can’t participate in activities such as
dancing. Joining a dance class or group that is targeted towards an older
audience is a great way to socialize and get exercise at the same time.
Scrapbooking and other crafts: Participating in
crafts such as scrapbooking in a group setting provides the opportunity to look
at old photographs and remember things from the past. It is also a great
opportunity to talk to others about these remembered experiences and share
meaningful moments with friends and loved ones. In the end, there is a
great sense of accomplishment at having created something valuable.
Cooking: Cooking with friends and family is a
fun way to socialize, and create delicious food at the same time. Try
preparing an old favourite (and maybe even teach the next generation how to
prepare it), or try learning how to cook something new and different.
Sports: It might seem like many sports are
off limits to elderly people, but there are still some activities that can be
enjoyed at nearly any age. Fishing, boating and golfing all have limited
physical demands and can be fun for everyone.
Video games: Playing video games is often an
activity that seems to be targeted at a younger audience, but new gaming
technology has led to some fun opportunities for players of all ages.
Newer gaming systems promote physical interaction during the games and are a
fun way to engage in activities such as bowling in the comfort of your own home
with friends and relatives.
Staying social has physical, psychological, and cognitive benefits, so it
is important to find an activity (or many activities) that you can do with
others on a regular basis.
